3A THIRD GRADE

WELCOME TO THE THIRD GRADE IN 3A OF CHRIST KING SCHOOL!

The end of our year together is fast approaching. It has been very rewarding to see the remarkable progress that the Third Graders have made. I am very grateful that you have entrusted me with these wonderful young people. It has been such a blessing to see them grow academically, grow in maturity, and grow in their faith.
As I work during these last weeks to make sure the students are prepared for Fourth Grade, I will continue to stress responsibility, doing quality work, and more independence.

This web page is designed to give you a brief overview of what is covered in our class during each month.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MONTH OF MAY:

Reading - Good reading skills are the key to success all across the curriculum. We will continue reading selections in our second semester book. Some of the skills we will work on are: summarizing, main idea, and fact and opinion. We work on some of the higher level thinking skills, such as making inferences and generalizations. I ask that you review our weekly story on Wednesday or Thursday nights with your child.
The Book-It program has ended but I would still like the students to be reading outside of school. This really helps children improve their vocabulary and comprehension. Thank you to all who emphasize reading in their home. Please continue to encourage reading during the summer months.
We continue reading with our "buddies" in Sixth Grade as our schedule permits.

Math - During this month we will finish work on dividing. We use the multiplication facts to understand the process of division. We will move on to geometry and then end with a few lessons on probability. Various problem solving strategies are continually being reviewed as well.
I expect all students to use their multiplication flash cards on a daily basis. Constant review at home does make a big difference! This month we will continue timed tests on multiplying facts. Please continue to review the flash cards over the summer months.
Students will have written Math homework Monday through Thursday nights so skills can be practiced independently. Most often this homework will be done in a Math notebook.

Handwriting - During May, we will continue our review of the cursive upper case letters. I encourage correct letter shape and slant as well as over-all neatness. We continue to use looseleaf paper, focusing especially on letter and word size. Be sure the children have wide ruled paper.

Spelling - Our book helps students to develop their vocabulary as well as spelling skills. Our units will focus on suffixes and prefixes, difficult spelling patterns, and dictionary skills. There will often be spelling homework, with a weekly test. I will expect all of the words to be written in cursive now.

Religion - Our text will be a wonderful help in building the children's faith and guiding them to grow closer to Jesus.
During May we will finish our focus on the Commandments and then move on to the Family Life book. This program emphasizes our relationships with God and with others.
As always, we work to put our faith into positive actions. There will be many opportunities for prayer, both individual and large group.

Social Studies - During this month we will finish a study of our government, from the local to the national level. Then we will focus on economics, from a general to a personal level.
The students will be expected to develop their critical thinking skills as we cover the various topics about our country.
The students will use a notebook and a folder of study guides for help in reviewing material for each chapter.

Language Arts - This month our grammar lessons will cover the basics of correct punctuation. We will also focus on pronouns. Our final writing project will be a creative story. I am very pleased at the progress the students are making in their writing assignments. The children wrote wonderful poems during April. In Third Grade we also work on developing good speaking habits.

This web page has no specific homework assignments since we are
encouraging the students to use their planner for day to day work.

Please let me know whenever you have any concerns or questions about the above information or anything else in 3A. My goal is to provide interesting and enjoyable experiences so every child can succeed.

Enjoy the warm weather!
God bless you!
