Updated: November 1, 2009

Welcome to Ms. Mikec's fourth grade website. We're off to a wonderful start to the school year! Take a look at what we will be doing in each class for the next few weeks.

READING: We will begin a small unit on poetry reading. Students will read a variety of poems focusing on rhythm, intonation, and fluency.

New reading logs will be sent home for the month of November. Remember, our goal is at least 500 minutes each month.

BOOKTALKS: Congratulations on completing the first quarter book talks. They have been wonderful! Please note, starting 2nd quarter, students are required to complete 2 book talks. (One must be from a poetry book. The other can be from a book of your choice) Students who are ready should sign up early in the quarter.

LANGUAGE ARTS/SPELLING: We have just completed our unit on nouns. A test is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3rd. Students will be introduced to journal writing using their composition notebooks. In Writer's Workshop, students will be working on personal narratives.

MATH: We have been working on adding and subtracting larger numbers with regrouping. Students will be introduced to algebraic expressions and equations using variables. We will be moving right into multiplication after this chapter. Students should review multiplication facts at home each day.

Excellent job to all who have been playing First in Math! Keep playing and practicing.

SCIENCE: Animal Adaptation Projects are due Monday, November 2nd. Students will share projects in class. Students have been learning about the skeletal system and bone health as part of a Health mini-unit. In class bone projects will be completed during the first week of November. Our next Science unit will cover Rocks and Minerals.

RELIGION: We have been focusing on The First Three Commandments and The Lord's Prayer. Students will be creating prayer books to reinforce the meaning of the different parts of the Lord's Prayer. Students will begin Chapter 5 Jesus, The Image of God.

HOMEWORK POLICY: Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday nights. Students should expect 30-60 minutes of work each night. Unless we are working on a long-term project, homework will not be assigned on weekends.

An assignment notebook will list your child’s homework and upcoming tests, quizzes, projects, and school news/reminders. Please sign your child’s assignment notebook each night. Check homework to see if all work is done neatly and thoroughly.

Tests and quizzes will be sent home and require a parent’s signature. They should then be returned the following day. Cheating will result in an automatic zero.

If your child does not complete a homework assignment, a recess will be taken away and a H.A.M. form (homework assignment missing) will be sent home. Please sign the form. The completed assignment along with the signed form are both due back the following day. You will be contacted by phone or e-mail if your 4th grader develops a habit of missing homework assignments.

If you plan to take a vacation during the school year, NO homework assignments will be given ahead of time. Make-up work will be given, and due dates will be discussed upon student’s return.

FRIDAY FOLDER: Your child’s weekly corrected work will be sent home in a separate folder on Fridays for you to review. Please sign the folder and return on Monday.

GRADING SCALE: Grading is based on tests, quizzes, daily work, homework, participation, and projects. Fourth graders will use the following grading scale:

A 95-100
A- 93-94
B+ 91-92
B 88-90
B- 85-87
C+ 83-84
C 80-82
C- 78-79
D+ 76-77
D 73-75
D- 70-72
U 69 and below

DISCIPLINE/BEHAVIOR POLICY: Our classroom rules emphasize respect and responsibility. We believe that all students can behave appropriately in the classroom and deserve positive feedback and privileges. Individual and group incentives will be given thoughout the year for exceptional behavior.

If a student breaks a school rule or behaves in an inappropriate or disruptive manner, a R.I.B. form (report of intermediate behavior) will be sent home, and a recess will be taken away. Please discuss the issue with your child, sign the form, and send it back the following day. If a pattern of misbehavior develops, a conference will be set up with you and your child to discuss a strategy for improvement.

BOOK ORDERS: Book orders are an inexpensive way to promote reading and develop your child’s home library. Please take advantage of this opportunity. Make checks payable to Scholastic Book Club.

I am very excited about the upcoming school year and am looking forward to getting to know you and your child. Please feel free to contact me at any time during the year regarding your 4th grader’s progress.
