Mrs.Dykstra's Busy Art room

Welcome to the artroom website!! We are learning alot and expressing ourselves through wonderful creations this winter. I would like to lay out some information on how art grades are formulated, and what my expectations are for Christ King students.

K4,K5, first, second and third graders are given a quarterly assessment grade that reflects how well they understood lessons and met expectations as far as using materials and demonstrating skills. Individual pieces of artwork are not given a letter grade at this young age. If you have questions about your child's grade, a review of your child's body of work for the quarter can certainly be set up so that evidence can be pointed out and explained.

Fourth and fifth graders receive grades on their projects, which, averaged together, make up their quarter grade.

Middle schoolers each recieved a handout explaining my grading procedures which was to be read and signed. Quarter grades are comprised of three elements. 70% is based on the grades students earn on projects, 15% is based on the average of their daily effort grades, and 15% is based on their sketchbook entries for the quarter. Please refer to the handout for further explanation .
I try to update webgrader on the weekends, however, some projects take a long time to execute. Be sure to ask your child what they are working on!!
The second quarter has come to an end although we missed it's last two days due to the freezing cold!! Since we could not plan for this event, I have made some changes to grading procedures in middle school. The sketchbook component to the quarter grade has not been factored in because many students were not able to hand their book in to me. Sixth graders had 2 worksheets as well as a drawing in their book. The middle school sketch book assignments will be counted in 3rd quarter so they must be completed for credit as well as 3rd quarter new assignments.

Here are some of the things we are working on at the beginning of third quarter...
k4 and k5 have been doing some work with textures. We have been using fabric and fiber scraps to create our art.
First graders looked at a work by Paul Klee showing a beautiful underwater scene. We created our own imaginative scenes in bright colors using crayon and watercolor.
Second graders are doing some relief printmaking with simple tagboard shapes and layers , just in time for Valentine's day.
Third graders are about to learn about the art of weaving. They will be making simple looms and letting their creative juices flow!
Fourth graders are learning about the possibilities of color through a project called Tints, Tones and Shades. Fifth graders currently explored watercolor in creating beautiful winter landscapes with birch trees and shadows.

My junior high students are all drawing inspiration from a number of artists for their work. Sixth graders are working on a tesselating shape design based on some art by M.C. Escher. Louise Nevelson, an American sculptor, provided some neat ideas to our seventh graders about using discarded forms to create something new. Lastly, the eighth graders all chose a masterpiece by an Impressionist or Post Impressionist to recreate using collage techniques. We are very hard at work.

I am always looking for volunteers who might help me with preparing materials, hanging artwork, mounting work, etc. If you can help out on any days, any time, let me know!
Artists are great collectors and recyclers, as you know. Can you save for us:
papertowel tubes
oatmeal canisters
puzzle pieces
reams of scrap paper
clean, used socks
cardboard egg cartons
styrofoam trays from fruits and vegetables
???
I will be adding more to this list soon. I am looking for some telephone wire for projects. My supply is out! It is wonderful, pliable, colorful stuff! Also if you have access to any wire you think might be useful for sculptural work, let me know. Thank you!!

We are also looking for a used, working toaster oven to have in the art room.

Thank you to Mrs. Harvey ( and our staff)for purchasing acrylic frames and mattes for artwork that will be displayed around school. Also look for new display boards with our art in the lower level.
