Noteworthy information for the month of May.....


GRADE 8:
Students in grade 8 will spend their final music class
enhancing their melodic and performance skills
preparing their class song, "My Wish", by Rascal Flatts.


ASSIGNMENT for the week of May 18, 2009:
No assignment was given this week.

Achievement grade:
Participation (65%) Assignments (10%) Tests (25%)
**Music class: Once a week for 45 minutes; 30 points per class.

GRADE 7:
Students in grade 7 completed a musical journey through history.
Their travels will took them from the Medieval Era in 400 AD to the the end of the Romantic Era in 1900.
Students explored architecture, customs, art, and music.
Completed music journals were due on 5/4/09 and will be graded
on a 100 point scale by Monday, 5/25/09.

GRADE 6:
Students in grade 6 presented two energetic performances on Wednesday for the
Spring concert. CONGRATULATIONS!! You should be proud of yourselves.

GRADE 5:
Students in grade 5 will continue enhancing their form and tone color skills
during the month of May. Songs and activities will incorporate the use of:

-Rondo, ABAB, ABABA
-creating background music for stories and poetry

-improvisation

Students will also be enhancing rhythmic skills, preparing a drum ensemble for
Mass on Friday, 5/15/09 (5A) and 5/22/09 (5A).

**Music Class: Twice a week for 30 minutes; 20 points per class.

GRADE 4:
Students in grade 4 will complete development of their melodic and performance skills during the month of May.
Songs and activities will develop skills in:

-note identification
-meter identification
-repeat sign; D.C. & D.S. al fine

-correct breathing and singing posture
-diction and expressive singing

-strophic form; hymn-like, in that
all verses are set to the same music

**Music Class: Twice a week for 30 minutes; 20 points per class.

GRADE 3:
Third grade students will complete development of their rhythmic and harmonic skills
during the month of May. "Music pizzas" will continue to be used to dictate, read and
perform rhythmic patterns in 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 times. Rests (meat) and dynamic (cheese)
will be added this month to enhance skills in rest and dynamic identification.

In each class students will also use hand signs, solfege, canons, rounds, ostinati,
counter-melodies and partner songs. Non-pitched and pitched percussion will
be added to songs and poems to develop harmonic skills.

Participation (80%) Tests (20%)
**Music Class: Twice a week for 30 minutes.
20 points per class

GRADE 2:
The second grade will complete development of their melodic and performance skills during the month of May, in preparation for the Spring Concert on May 13th.
Songs and activities will develop:

-diction, posture and breath control
-independent singing; echo sing phrases; sing simple folk songs
-sing and speak with expression.

-compositition of ostinati
-note identification
-tempo


Achievement grade:
Participation (80%) Spring Concert (20%).
**Music Class: Twice a week for 30 minutes.
10 points per class

GRADE 1:
First grade will complete musical activities in harmony and melody
during the month of May.
Students will sing, move and create music enhancing skills in:

-same/different phrases
-ABA and AB form

-introduction
-repeat sign
-playing with dynamics loud and soft

-listening skills
-steady beat

-identification of quarter note, eighth notes, half note,
and quarter rest
-fast and slow sounds; getting faster and slower

-using nonpitched instruments to perform rhythmic patterns
-singing while moving


Achievement grade:
Participation (80%) Tests(20%).
Music Class: Twice a week for 30 minutes.
10 points per class.

Grade K-5:
Students in K-5 will complete development of their performance and melodic skills
during the month of May, in preparation for the Spring concert on May 13th.

Songs and activities will develop their understanding of:

-singing in concert formation
-proper singing position

-singing expressively with dynamics
-movement while singing

Additional seasonal songs and activities will also be used
to develop their understanding of:
-steady beat
-loud and soft

-upward and downward movement
-short and long sounds

-fast and slow
-patterns




Grade K-4:
During the month of May students in K-4 will be polishing their performance for the
Spring concert on May 13th . Students will complete memorizing the song lyrics and add
creative movements to accompany their songs.

In addition, songs and activities will develop an understanding of:

-sound and silence
-steady beat
-short and long sounds

-one and two sounds to the beat
-fast and slow
-chant or sing while moving

Students will also continue developing an understanding of:
-singing, speaking, inside and whispering voices
-high and low
-upward and downward
-sol-mi patterns and hand signs
