Noteworthy information for the month of November.....


GRADE 8:
During the first 2 quarters of music education students in grade 8
will take a musical journey from the continent of Africa to the birth of Rock N' Roll.
The unit will conclude with a unit written assessment.

ASSIGNMENT for the week of November 23, 2009:
Eighth grade did not meet for music class this week.
No assignment is due for Monday, 11/30/09.


**MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
Students in grade 8 will participate in the Spring Concert this year.
Their performance will be on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 6:30 P.M.
Attendance is not optional.

Achievement grade:
Class participation (65%) Assignments (10%) Tests (25%)
**Music class: Once a week for 40 minutes; 30 participation points per class.

GRADE 7:
Students in grade 7 will be taking a musical journey through history for the first
two quarters of music. Their travels will take them from the Medieval Era in 400 AD to the the end of the Romantic Era in 1900 AD.
Customs, artists, composers and music will be explored.
Each student will keep a music journal in which they will document a 24 hour visit
to 5 different eras of music history in Europe.

Each entry should include:
-Year of your visit.
Please remember to remain within the era being discussed in class.
-Choose a European city or countryside to visit.
-Useful items taken on the 24 hour visit.
-Sights, smells, interesting people, customs, and music experienced.
-Minimum of 2 resources documented.
-Typed; correct spelling and grammar; 3 five sentence paragraphs in length.
-Inclusion of picture(s), computer generated or sketched.
-Journal cover, drawn or computer generated.
**The cover does not have to be completed until the Romantic Era.
Era dividers are optional.


ASSIGNMENT for the week of November 23, 2009:
Seventh grade did not meet for music class this week.
Students should use the time to complete any missing entries in their music journals.

Monday, December 21, 2009.
Music era journals should be completed, bound and a cover added. Be creative!!

GRADE 6:
Students in grade 6 will continue developing their melodic, harmonic skills and
performance skills during the month of November.
Activities will include:

-vocal range extension
-recognizing vocal ranges and categories
-two and three part singing
-reading musical octavos

Assignment for the week of November 23, 2009.
Students in grade 6 will be performing in the Christmas concert on Wednesday, 12/9/09.
CONCERT ATTIRE:
Boys: Dress or school uniform pants
**no cargo pants or jeans
Long-sleeved, button-down shirt with a collar (any color)
Tie
**no light-up or musical tie please

Girls:
Sunday or holiday clothes
**no jeans or cargo pants

**Music class: Once a week for 40 minutes;

GRADE 5:
Students in grade 5 will continue enhancing their tone color skills during
the month of November. Songs and activities will include:

- Folk traditions of other cultures, especially the native American Indian
**November is American Indian Heritage month

-Creating creative movement

**Music Class: Twice a week for 30 minutes
20 participation points per class.

GRADE 4:
Students in grade 4 will continue melodic development during the month of November.
Songs and activities will develop skills in:

-note identification
-meter identification
-repeat sign; D.C. & D.S. al fine

-correct breathing and singing posture
-diction and expressive singing

-strophic form; hymn-like, in that
all verses are set to the same music

Students in grade 4 will participating in the Christmas concert on Wednesday, 12/9/09.
CONCERT ATTIRE:
Boys and Girls:
Sunday or holiday clothes

GRADE 3:
Third grade students will develop their skills in form during the month of November.
Songs and activities will incorporate an understanding of:

-AB, ABA, Rondo and theme and variations
-Interlude

-Repeat signs
-Folk music and dance and creative movement pieces

In each class students will also continue study of the families of the orchestra.
During the month of October an understanding of bowed and struck members of the string family were developed.

**Music Class: Twice a week for 30 minutes.
20 participation points per class.

GRADE 2:
The second grade will coninue developing their melodic and performance
skills during the month of November.
Songs and activities will develop:

-diction, posture and breath control
-independent singing; echo sing phrases; sing simple folk songs
-sing and speak with expression.

-compositition of ostinati
-note identification
-tempo

Students in grade 2 will perform in the Christmas concert on Wednesday, 12/9/09.

GRADE 1:
During the month of November students in first grade will begin development
of their harmonic and melodic skills.
Students will develop an understanding of:

-Higher and lower
-Upward, downward and stay the same

-Staff and notes
-Sol-Mi-La patterns

-Simple rhythmic and melodic ostinati (repeated rhythmic patterns)
-Chant or sing while moving
-Speech and melodic rounds


Achievement grade:
Class participation (80%) Tests (20%).
Music Class: Twice a week for 30 minutes.
10 participation points per class.

Grade K-5:
Students in K-5 will develop their performance skills during the month of November.
Songs and activities will develop their understanding of:

-singing in concert formation
-proper singing position

-singing expressively with dynamics
-movement while singing

Additional seasonal songs and activities will also be used
to develop their understanding of:
-steady beat
-loud and soft

-upward and downward movement
-short and long sounds

-fast and slow
-patterns

Grade K-4:
Through singing and movement students in K-4 will begin exploring and
developing their rhythmic skills during the month of November.
Students will develop an understanding of:

-steady beat
-short and long sounds
-one and two sounds to the beat

-walking and galloping meter
-sound and silence
-patterns

-play unpitched instruments to the rhythm of the words
-fast and slow

The classroom mouse puppet, "Cheddar", will continue to help the children
develop their understanding of dynamics.

**Students in K-4 will participate in the performance of the Spring Concert
on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 6:30 P.M. in the church.
