Artist Statement
We live on a planet of indescribable beauty, mystery and biological diversity. I am awestruck when I think of all the flowers, rivers, ever changing skies and blue waters, islands and capes, wild animals, from chipmunks to elephants, plants and continents. The miracle of life unfolds before our eyes every day and it's up to us to see its beauty. I derive my imagery from natural world in order to express this wonder and share it with a viewer.
But despite all the beauty that surrounds us "most men lead lives of quiet desperation" as Henry David Thoreau said. When I first heard this quote from a friend I thought to myself : "This can't be true".But then I looked around and inside myself and sadly realized the truth of that statement. It's QUIET desperation, which nobody sees, hidden inside each person; it is invisible, but ever present. Antoine de Saint-Exupery called it "the secret place, the land of tears." The purpose of my art is to provide a healing, if somewhat fleeting, relief from that desperation; to comfort, and remind the viewer that beauty still exists, is within our reach and that not all is lost.
I begin by priming the canvas heavily with mixture of gesso and sand, creating textural surface which I further develop with placing strips of cheese cloth and small objects into it (like Lego blocks and beads, for example) . After it dries, the surface is build up further with coats of acrylic and oil in order to achieve the rich and brilliant hues. It is the texture of the painting that I love, intricate play of light and shadow on the peaks and valleys.
Vibrant and strong colors play a key role in my work. Although I currently reside in New York, fond memories of Italy, Morocco, the Amazon rainforest and other sun-drenched places continuously inspire my palette.
Abstract and figurative motifs are combined on the picture plane in order to express the complexity of life that never cease to amaze me.
Three components of the painting is crucial to me -- texture, color and meaning. If one component is lacking the whole painting is incomplete.
My artwork is a result of a lifelong journey into self discovery. It compelled me to travel around the world, learn different meditative techniques and experience motherhood. When somebody inquires "How long it took you to paint this picture?" I understand the reasons behind the question; I answer it, but inside myself I think : "How long? My entire life."
