NATIONAL AMERICAN INDIAN AIDS FOUNDATION

The National American Indian AIDS Foundation was founded in December 6th, 2002, by Calvin E. Twoguns. A member of the Seneca Nation of Indians living with HIV/AIDS since April 1992, he served as an HIV/AIDS Advocate & Consultant in Santa Cruz, California. In 1996 he was assigned to represent the American Indian Population of California by former governor Davis and served on the Ryan White Title II Task Force.

His travels throughout the US eventually led him from San Francisco, California through the Las Vegas region of Nevada, and in March of 2001 to Rochester, New York where he is currently active on many HIV/AIDS committees throughout the Finger Lakes Region.

He decided that a foundation dedicated to the unmet needs of rural and urban Native American Indians living with HIV/AIDS throughout the United States and Canada, after finding out that no program services existed for Native Americans Indians in the Finger Lakes region for those living with HIV/AIDS. As the only foundation in the United States of America strictly focused and dedicated to American Indians/Native Americans living with HIV/AIDS who have exhausted all Federal/State/Local Resources.

The foundation raises monies and underwrites special grants for those American Indians who live on reservations in rural areas of the United States and Canada that have barriers that impede the health and welfare services/as well as HIV/AIDS resources. These grants are strictly for payment of utility bills (i.e. phone, gas, electric), clothing, furniture and travel costs to health care centers for treatment.

Out of 562 tribes; 480 of them are federally recognized throughout the United States. However, some of these are so small that HIV/AIDS could wipe them out within a decade. National American Indian AIDS Foundation's goal is to ensure that this does not occur.

Since the beginning of the AIDS pandemic in the 1980's, American Indians/Native Americans living with HIV/AIDS, went from 275 cases in 1993 to over 4,150 in 2003. Out of this total 2,875 are living with AIDS. ( over a thousand percent...!!!). Of the 4, 150 affected by HIV/AIDS, over 1200 have already died from AIDS. Estimates to date have indicated that there may be as many as 15,000 or more living with the HIV virus, but are not being tested due to cultural barriers within their own tribes.

The US Surgeon General has already stated that this disease is "a walking time bomb" for the Native American Indian Community. Statistics are also suggesting that the HIV/AIDS infection rate is close to 12% per 100,000 in the American Indian Communities throughout the United States. Canadian Statistics currently are 14% through the aborginal population.
