HOPE YOU & YOUR PLANTS MAKE IT THROUGH THIS WINTER JUST GREAT, and
Thank's for visiting here today. Hi! I'm Tony O. from N.E.Oklahoma.
There's a link below to a message board. Let's talk about animals & plants, planting times, what (& where) to plant, the best ways to do it & etc. Open discussions are encouraged. If you have any suggestions of things that you'd like to see on this site, please go there to & let me know. I'll see what I can do. I had to re-do it because of a lot of spam being put on it. I saved a few of the older posts. It's almost like starting over again. Please post something on it. Let's bring it back to life. THANKS!

. Did you know that even in zones 5 & 6 that it is possible to grow Palms, Bananas & other tropical looking things? Here, east of beautiful, down town Jay, Oklahoma, (zone 6) is a small piece of the "tropics" in the North Eastern corner of Oklahoma!![]()
The above palm photo was taken spring of year 2000. It is a Washingtonia robusta seedling planted on the pond edge, that was over-wintered there for the 2nd year in the ground (with minimum protection) here in zone 6. That shows that it CAN be done. It lasted 3 years till I didn't get around to protecting it before a HARD freeze. Altho it's more common now, back then it was unheard of to over winter something like that without heat of some type.

S. Louisiana"
It produced seeds last year, and are producing seeds again this year.
Also some needle palms ![]()
They were planted with no more than a little mulch at the base.
Also a few other trunking type palm trees planted.
I'm starting some trunking yucca as well.![]()
I have a few tropical banana plants, as well as hardy ones.
Bananas.org International Banana Society - Bananas.org contains many ongoing discussions about bananas, banana care, banana identification, recipes, members from around the world. Photo Gallery, Map, Resources for the banana enthusiast.
Also check out this True Banana Facts link.
Here's my Musa Basjoo from year 7 in the ground:![]()
It bloomed & produced little bananas before it froze that year.
I have everal different citrus . . . Here's my 1st lemon![]()
.And other tropical type things planted here in zone 6 (with non heated winter protection) I plan on adding a lot more. This will be the 10th winter for hardy double yellow Oleander, Canna, Elephant ears, & also M. basjoo (banana plant) in the garden. There are lots of other things growing here that they say "won't grow here" like Calla lillies. I plan to make a photo page as soon as I get to it.
Do you have things that I may be interested in? Contact me on the message board to see if we can work out a trade.

I'm also interested in fancy fowl & exotic poultry of many types. I'm even thinking about getting some monks parrots to release here. Now THAT would really give it the tropical feel. Anyone have any???
As you know, there is usually a bug problem in the country. You know, Ticks & Chiggers? Well I haven't had even ONE tick or Chigger bite from here ALL last summer. The reason is - - - We have Guineas here that eat them. As for the garden, it turns out that the Guineas LOVE grasshoppers. If you're interested in learning more about them, there is a link under this, to an excellent web site. It will tell you everything you ever wanted to know, but were afraid to ask, about Guineas. (and then some) Enjoy Frit's Farm -
Gardening with Guineas
I started my page on 1/10/00. I will be adding, changing & up-grading as time goes on. (I should say, as time allows) Stop by as often as you like & if you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to either E-mail me or put it on my message board. Email link at very bottom.
Oops, Because it's a free service, I can't add too much more because of space limitations. So I'll add links above for other pages soon, in order to continue expanding my site. Due to my work, I've been away and not able to do much to this site. I'm just starting to work on some of the links. Others are old & need up dating. It's gonna take some time though, so please bare with me.
